Is mixing ram stick capacities bad?
You're considering adding another 8GB RAM stick to your Ryzen system. This could help improve performance, especially if the current 16GB is causing bottlenecks. However, keep in mind that adding more RAM beyond the recommended limits may not always be effective and could affect stability. It's best to check your motherboard specifications and ensure compatibility before proceeding.
It seems to be about a single-channel performance penalty. The issue might vary—partially, not at all, or even nonexistent. Compatibility isn't assured when combining different RAM kits. Running at JEDEC speeds helps, but that wasn't mentioned. With mixed capacities, incompatibilities become more likely, though it should still function. If it works, you're likely using dual-channel mode with 16GB in dual and 8GB in single. That could resolve the problem. Alternatively, all devices might operate in single-channel mode because of the varied capacities. I haven't personally faced this with mixed capacities, but others say it can happen. The safest choice would be to replace your current RAM with a 2x8GB package.
Is there an issue? Since OP is fine on his PC, why waste time fixing it? It either functions or the system won’t boot. With dual-channel at 16+8 GB (16 GB) and single-channel for the rest, the first 16 GB are prioritized. If RAM usage goes over 16 GB, bandwidth switches to single channel for the remaining 8 GB—this is called FLEX mode.
