Is it worth it to overclock?
Is it worth it to overclock?
I have an i7-4790k and a GTX970, and I can overclock.
I wonder if it’s really worth doing.
Would I see a big jump in FPS and overall performance, or would my PC just work harder than necessary for a small change?
Thanks,
Ron
It varies based on your challenges, but with this setup you can handle most tasks at full power. Your GPU might be overclocked easily, offering a slight speed increase in games that are very graphics-heavy (as long as you stay under 60 fps).
This is assuming you're playing at 1080p 60hz.
There isn't much of a reason to OC unless you want to crank SSAA. Your CPU isn't going to be bottlenecking the 970. Also, a 970 is about as good as it gets for 1080p. Anything above that won't give you any improvements worth noting in games.
That having been said, if you do want to play with AA up or you have a higher res or refresh rate monitor you would definitely benefit from overclocking. CPU overclocking will give you a more stable frame rate with less (if you have any) fps drops. Since we all know minimum fps is what breaks immersion. As stated by Sneaky, a GPU overclock is simple and can also give a nudge of improvement. At the end of the day it's up to you but I would always recommend overclocking when possible to alleviate as many possible bottlenecks as possible; or at least make it less drastic.
