I have a 8.1 score on my notebook. It looks good, but I’m not sure it’s reliable for serious tasks. The choice depends on what you’re comfortable with.

I've set up Windows 8.1 on my 840 Evo SSD, and everything is running smoothly. It's quick to respond and all the games and applications are functioning properly.

You're likely looking at an upgrade path. If you're on Windows 7, it might not be necessary. For XP or Vista, the change could be beneficial.
