Is it practical to employ an outdated system for capturing video?
So I own a gaming setup that appears in my profile, but I have some concerns about setting up an older PC intended for video capture. I’d appreciate any advice or insights on whether this would meet my requirements. Additionally, I’m looking for guidance on capture cards.
Specs of the Capture System:
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-970A- DS3P
CPU: AMD FX 6120
GPU: Sapphire AMD HD 4870 (can be swapped for Asus AMD HD-7950 or XFX AMD HD-7970, both available on the parts shelf)
RAM: G. Skill Ripjaws 8GB @1600MHz
HDD: Seagate 500GB, likely SATA2 — can be upgraded to a larger model if needed
PSU: Antec EarthWatts (model '20 ancient '07-'08), 650W — needs replacement due to age
Case: Antec 902
This build was assembled for a young user with limited resources, using spare parts. It seems designed more for basic capture tasks rather than high-end gaming. I’m considering whether it can handle 1080p–1440p video capture and what options exist for USB capture devices.
I also have questions about how capture cards function and whether they require a signal splitter from the GPU, especially with some models offering only one HDMI input.
Thoughts and opinions are welcome. I’m not planning to upgrade to a newer system; instead, I’ll stick with what I have and replace the PSU to accommodate the older GPU.
What video capture software are you planning to use?
Typically, applications list hardware needs as "minimal," "recommended," and "best."
You generally prefer not to settle for minimal options and aim for the highest quality that fits your budget.
Since you're assembling from parts, the "best" available will depend on what you already have and the performance goals of your project.
Try it out, test it, and proceed accordingly.
That’s my perspective on the situation.
At the moment, I'm using AMD adrenaline for my captures, but I'm capturing on my gaming PC, which is the simpler option. Do capture cards usually come without capture software?
