Is it possible to play Red Dead Redemption 2 at a medium setting with a frame rate limiter?
My desktop computer is quite capable, however my graphics card limits its performance. I occasionally browse games and recently became interested in Red Dead Redemption 2. I’m not seeking maximum visual quality, but I'd like to know if it will operate this game effectively at medium settings with a 1080p resolution and a fixed frame rate of 30 frames per second, given my hardware specifications.
Processor: Ryzen 5 2600x
Memory: 16GB
Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 2GB
To play the game, a computer must meet these specifications: Processor: Intel Core i7-4770K or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X. Memory: 12 GB. Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 (6GB) or AMD Radeon RX 480 (4GB). Available storage: 150 GB. Video memory: 3072 MB. While the developer’s “minimum” standards are subject to discussion, most agree that this is the bare minimum needed for the game to operate at the lowest settings with acceptable frame rates, approximately 20-30 FPS. I believe it would function, however, I doubt it would be a pleasurable experience. One could further reduce the settings by customizing them to levels lower than the pre-defined options, as demonstrated by “LOW SPEC GAMER” on YouTube. But this question is: how drastically can you lower the settings to…
The game’s base specifications demand: a processor like the Intel Core i7-4770K or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X, 12 GB of memory, a graphics card such as the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 with 6 GB of VRAM or an AMD Radeon RX 480 with 4 GB, and at least 150 GB of available storage space. While developers consider these to be the lowest possible standards, most players agree that this is necessary simply to run the game at its most basic settings and achieve a frame rate of approximately 20-30 frames per second.
I personally believe the game would function, though it likely wouldn’t be a pleasurable experience. You could further reduce settings beyond the default presets, mirroring what “LOW SPEC GAMER” demonstrates on YouTube. However, this raises the question of how low you are prepared to go in order to achieve a satisfactory level of playability.
Furthermore, a 1660 TI card can be purchased for around $260 currently, which would likely render the game playable at medium settings. I consider this a reasonable investment for those seeking a better experience.

Should you purchase the game online, investigate whether a return policy exists, like that found on Steam. Steam permits playing a title for approximately two hours before initiating a refund – sufficient time to determine if it performs satisfactorily. However, this game isn't currently available on Steam, so you should inquire with Rockstar’s online store and also investigate whether it's accessible through Epic Games.
That’s helpful information. Yes, I wouldn't purchase it using a 1050 unless there was an opportunity for a refund or, as you suggested, an upgrade to a more powerful graphics card.
