Is it possible to overclock the motherboard's CPU independently?
About a week ago my computer began reaching 4700mhz and it kept spiking. After checking the BIOS, I noticed the CPU was being overclocked to hit around 5 ghz. I reset everything back to defaults but the motherboard continued overclocking the CPU, now setting it as default. I manually restarted using the two-pin method with the metal object, but it didn’t fix the issue. I contacted Asus, who suggested it might be a motherboard or CPU problem. I still have warranty coverage for both parts—should I replace them or try another solution?
Are you using the most recent BIOS version? Has ASUS advised you to update? If not, that's quite concerning from their part.
When using the same CPU and motherboard, the same outcome will occur. Even with a different motherboard, this effect might still happen. I'm not sure if this is considered a bug or flaw. Intel's design allows a 9900K to automatically increase to 5 GHz on a couple of cores when turbo boost is active. If your motherboard supports MCE, it will raise the speed to 5 GHz across all cores. Just disable MCE in BIOS settings.
