Can a monitor damage a GPU? I’m dealing with an unusual case. I recently upgraded my monitor as part of a preliminary step before assembling a new system. My existing setup is:
Asus Rogue Strix Z390-E
Intel 9900kf processor
RTX 3090 Kingpin Hybrid GPU
Corsair hx1200i PSU
CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR4 3000 (PC4 24000)
My old monitor was an Asus VG27BQ.
The new monitor I installed is an Asus PG32UCDP at 4k 240hz.

To understand what happened, I configured the new display, planning to run it at 240hz despite my CPU being rated for 4k 60hz. Initially, everything worked perfectly—Windows 10 was running smoothly, and I tested Black Ops 6 without issues. During gameplay, I maintained around 88fps consistently.

After roughly four matches, I checked the monitor’s settings. In the OSD, under gaming > variable refresh rate, the slider was set to “on.” I toggled it off to observe the effect: the screen went black momentarily, and my PC fell silent. After about 20 seconds, static appeared across the top to bottom of the display. The system crashed entirely. I manually powered off the PC and restarted it.

Once back online, I restored the variable refresh rate setting. I then tried rebooting Black Ops, but the game crashed again within seconds, displaying an error. I attempted various fixes—lowering the refresh rate to 60hz, scanning and repairing the game, uninstalling and reinstalling Black Ops 6, updating GPU drivers, even reverting to my old monitor with a different cable—but the issue persisted.

My concern is whether this change in settings during gameplay triggered a hardware failure. Could it be related to the GPU or another component? I’m quite experienced with technology and have built around 20 systems. This situation has left me puzzled. I’ve already decided to return the monitor, as I don’t want to risk another machine. Any guidance or advice would be invaluable. Thank you!

Short answer; no.
You could try using DDU to clear all GPU drivers (Intel, AMD, Nvidia) in Safe Mode, then install the newest driver from Nvidia's support site manually, for example by right-clicking the installer and selecting Run as Administrator.

You didn’t mention the case model or the system temperatures when these problems started.

Reset your game settings, I see you reinstalled it, but sometimes games retain settings in a different profile elsewhere. Check how to reset them fully online.

Beyond that, physically 3090 can't reach 240Hz at 4k, no matter what you try. The bandwidth for its HDMI/Displayport connector just isn’t enough, so it’s probably not worth the effort.

If you attempt to push it further, you’ll likely encounter an out-of-scope black screen, which could have occurred when you tried that resolution and refresh rate combo.

Turning off VRR on the monitor while the game or driver is active might lead to issues, though it shouldn't necessarily lock up the GPU. The in-game settings are likely misconfigured and probably saved in the system registry or a user-specific file. Warzone 2 should have a way to reset to default graphics after a crash at startup; this isn’t happening with the latest Block Ops versions. I’d suggest using the official forums for Black Ops to fix it. Also, it might help to contact AMD directly—turning VRR off in the game shouldn’t cause the problems you saw, and the driver should manage it.

Thanks for the details. The Asus monitor was indeed affected; the movement of that setting caused everything to crash. It had been running smoothly with HDR enabled, 240Hz at 4K for about 45 minutes, and temperatures were normal. I’m pretty sure it was the setting that triggered the issue, not a random occurrence after switching it off.

I already set the monitor to return. I’ve ordered replacement parts to speed up my new PC build, but right now I can’t play games. The only one I have is B06. Would testing the theory help if I logged into a different Battle.net account and tried Warzone? Just a question. Or would completely uninstalling and reinstalling work? As I mentioned, I’m planning to build my new PC from scratch soon anyway, but my OCD keeps me on this. Thanks for all the info and any further advice!
