So in short, I assisted my roommate in assembling his PC, which featured an 8700k and a Z370 ROG motherboard. After I left, he decided to take apart the build to apply new thermal paste. While installing the processor, it seems he may have installed it incorrectly—possibly bending a few pins on the motherboard and even part of the processor. I have the device now, though my camera isn’t sharp enough to show the damage clearly. It appears only a small corner is bent, and there’s a tiny micro-fracture on the side. It looks like the processor might be damaged, though it could still work. He handed me both the processor and motherboard, saying if I can fix them, I can keep them. I’m considering returning them if they function properly, but it’s hard not to feel sympathy for him. Do anyone have suggestions or experience with fixing this kind of issue? I think the pins on the motherboard are fixable, but the processor seems more problematic. There’s also some thermal paste left on the processor pads, which might be a bigger issue. I was thinking of cleaning it with isopropyl alcohol carefully. Any advice would be really helpful. Thanks.

Isopropyl alcohol should effectively clean the thermal paste on the pads. Regarding a potential crack in the CPU, the best approach is to gently bend it back and see if it straightens. If successful, run a test. If the system fails to boot, the CPU is likely damaged. For confirmation, compare with another 8xx series CPU to ensure the socket is intact.

the cpu is far from the corner of the "processor," it sits right in the middle. The main concerns are a faulty pin landing area or damaged traces on the pcb. If those spots aren’t compromised, it’s likely okay and you shouldn’t attempt to reposition the pin. Isopropyl works well for the thermal interface material. Regarding the pins on the motherboard, I’m pretty sure Linus posted a video about fixing them recently—possibly Jayz, but definitely Linus. The main issue will arise if the cpu itself has a problem. If the system doesn’t boot, don’t discard parts; try installing a verified good cpu in the affected motherboard and a known-good one elsewhere. At this stage, it’s impossible to determine which is faulty. (p.s. the acronym info was included because I don’t want to see someone using one I’m unfamiliar with)

Completely foolish. Spending more than $500 on premium gear only to have it fail is ridiculous.

Gently apply light pressure with careful intent. You can reach the pads and capacitors without causing damage.

It should work out okay. I expected the bend to be more serious. If I could, I'd use a woodworker's vise to straighten it, but likely just dropping it into the socket would be fine. Since it's curving upward, adding weight probably won't harm the pins and might help realign it.
