Restarting your router is triggered by power loss, and your ISP will also change them periodically.

Aereldor has the correct point. Rebooting your modem or router will reset your IP address.

The main issue with switching your IP address is that devices needing access to your network won’t function until they obtain the new one. It’s similar to how a Minecraft server or IP camera works. Restarting your router might not always update your IP, as it depends on your ISP; however, in most cases I’ve seen it does change.

It will require some time before you receive the updated IP.

It depends on your ISP. The Mine doesn’t update my IP until I reset the connection to the external modem. My friend’s IP shifts around every couple of days without any action, which was bothersome when he was running an MC server.

Like your router uses DHCP to assign private IPs within the LAN at certain intervals, your ISP handles the same process on the wider network side. Usually, this happens when you restart your modem or gateway. If you don’t notice the change and you aren’t paying for a fixed WAN IP, it could indicate that your account’s IP lease is still active but hasn’t expired yet. It will eventually expire after a period of time.

You probably have a changing Dynamic IP if you don’t skip to the next line, or your ISP cycles it periodically. Your device and network gear will instantly detect the new address. With a Static IP, this can be frustrating—anything needing that fixed address must be updated manually to stay online.
