Is it a bad idea to overclock an I7 950?
Hi everyone
I'm planning to purchase a new CPU cooler for my i7 950. I was thinking about whether I could push it overclocked, but since it's getting quite old... could overclocking actually harm it?! My motherboard is an x58 and I have a 650w PSU and GTX 960. Thanks a lot!
I'm in the same situation as you. There are many experts on Tom's who say the 950 remains a very capable CPU, especially with overclocking, which could improve performance significantly. It's true that overclocking an old CPU might risk damage since the chip is aging, but others have advised that it might be worth replacing it with a used one, as it would be relatively cheap.
I haven't overclocked mine yet because I'm not very skilled in doing so. I'm still learning and reading up on it! But I plan to try one day.
Anyone else have a more experienced perspective?
Good luck, mate!

You're suggesting that overclocking might be worth considering for improving performance, despite concerns about potential damage from age. Some experts believe the CPU remains quite capable and could benefit from adjustments. Many have advised replacing it if it's in good condition, as a second-hand unit would likely be affordable. You haven't overclocked yet but are learning more. Others are curious about your experience level. Good luck!
You're asking about whether overclocking can extend the life of the CPU, considering its age and potential risks. It's worth noting that many experts believe the 950 remains a capable processor, especially with overclocking, though it may require replacement eventually due to its age. Some suggest it might be worth replacing it for better performance, while others recommend keeping it for learning purposes. The longevity depends on stability and temperature management.
You're in the same situation as them. There are many experts on Tom's who say the 950 remains a strong CPU and overclocking could improve its performance. While it's true that overclocking an old chip might risk damage, others suggest it's worth considering a used replacement for cost savings. I haven't overclocked yet because I'm not skilled enough, but I'm still learning. Would anyone else have more experience to share? Good luck!

No problem, very pleased to assist!
I've heard many conflicting tales about Assassin's Creed. Just get a fresh cooler for your CPU and you'll notice much better temperatures. Don't forget to reapply the new paste after installing the cooler.
😉
Good luck with your 950. I enjoy connecting with others who have similar aging CPUs! I'm always trying to get the most out of this old machine—9 years old but still in great shape!
You can find my system listed on my name badge.
Good luck and have fun, man!
