Is fx6300 worth water cooling?
Is fx6300 worth water cooling?
I'll be honest, I'm looking for a cooler that can push my FX6300 to at least 4.5-4.6Ghz. My current air cooler only goes up to 4.1Ghz. I'm thinking about the "deepcool maelstrom 120t" and want to know which choice makes the most sense:
1. Buy it – it should let me hit 4.5Ghz or more (40€)
2. Skip it – go with Intel MB using i3 6100 (~180€)
3. Upgrade to fx8350 (~170€)
4. Hold off for the next AMD Ryzen release
Please share your thoughts before I decide.
Your CPU cooler performs exceptionally well. A AIO 120mm model will offer minimal advantage. Consider investing slightly more in a 240mm if feasible, though a 120mm should comfortably handle 4.7 GHz.
I’m currently using a 280mm radiator to manage my FX 4350 4.90 GHz VCore at 1.6V. You’re likely to achieve higher clock speeds than mine—possibly up to 5.0 GHz, depending on your chip’s voltage requirements (around 4.5 GHz at 1.40000V).
Avoid overspending on a CPU that provides only marginal gains unless gaming is your main focus. Also, upgrade to DDR4 RAM and a new motherboard.
If you’re spending around €40 or less, allocate the money toward a larger cooler. This will be beneficial when Zen introduces new models, allowing you to reuse the same cooler.
Hold off on the AMD Zen and Kabylake releases; other chip prices are expected to fall more. It's not advisable to continue using the fx series going forward.

my cryorig h7 is running poorly and i'm using it at 4.5 ghz with 4.600 volts.

Don't invest heavily in a CPU that only slightly improves your setup unless you're primarily gaming. Also, upgrade to DDR4 RAM and a new motherboard.
If you need the €40 or more, consider a larger cooler for better value. Then, when Zen arrives, you can swap to a compatible one.
Apologies for the delayed reply.
Thank you for your detailed response! I'm planning to purchase a 240mm cooler (about €10 extra) after seeing good reviews. The main concern now is compatibility with the upcoming Ryzen AM4 socket—have you heard anything about that? I also sent an email to Deepcool about it, but they didn't respond.
