Hi everyone,
since yesterday when I replaced the thermal paste on my Asus TUF A17 laptop, I've noticed extreme FPS drops, sometimes as low as 10. I usually see normal performance for 2-3 minutes, then it drops to 10 again and then returns to normal.
My system has a Ryzen 7 6800h, RTX 3070ti, and 16 GB DDR5 RAM.
Could someone assist me?
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forums, newcomer! After changing the thermal paste, what replaced it? Specifically, what model did you use? Did you also verify the vents on your laptops for any dirt or debris?

For your Asus TUF A17 Laptop with Ryzen 7 6800h, RTX 3070ti, and 16 GB DDR5 RAM, please check if there are any pending BIOS updates. Then, see if your operating system needs an update. After that, use DDU in Safe Mode to remove all GPU drivers (Intel, AMD, Nvidia), and then manually install the latest driver from Nvidia's support site via an elevated command—right-click the installer and select Run as Administrator.

I used arctic mx4 and also cleaned all fans.
Edit: I tried everything you suggested but it didn't work.

After some trials, the drops start when my GPU2 VID Usage falls from about 50% to 15% (via MSI Afterburner). Any ideas?

Have you checked if the chipset driver has been updated? This is crucial.
Review these recommendations:
AI Overview
To prevent stuttering on your Asus TUF A17, make sure to update your graphics drivers and BIOS, select performance mode, ensure the laptop is powered on, run a clean boot to eliminate software conflicts, clean the fan dust and think about replacing the thermal paste for temperature problems, or verify that Chrome isn’t using excessive background CPU resources.
Software & Driver Fixes
Upgrade Drivers and BIOS:
Install the newest graphics (AMD or NVIDIA) and chipset drivers, and update your laptop’s BIOS to the latest release, since outdated drivers may lead to performance problems, as Lenovo advises.
Examine Browser Extensions and Tabs:
If stuttering happens in Chrome, turn off extensions or limit open tabs to lower CPU load, as Microsoft Learn suggests.
Conduct a Clean Boot:
Launch Windows with only essential programs to identify if third-party software is causing conflicts.
Use DDU for Driver Reinstallation:
If the new drivers don’t resolve the issue, download Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) and perform a clean uninstall of your current graphics drivers before installing the latest versions.
Hardware & System Adjustments
Verify Power and Performance Settings:
Enable Performance mode, ensure the laptop remains powered on, and avoid intensive multitasking.
Track CPU/GPU Activity:
Utilize built-in tools or Task Manager to detect irregular spikes in CPU or GPU usage, which may signal bottlenecks.
Tackle Overheating Problems:
Clean the laptop’s fans and vents to enhance airflow. Elevated temperatures can trigger CPU throttling, resulting in stuttering. If the problem continues, replace the CPU and GPU thermal paste.
Turn off BD PROCHOT:
Disabling this feature might help stabilize frame rates by stopping throttling during sudden FPS drops.
Modify Adaptive Sync:
If your display supports it, activate Adaptive Sync (G-SYNC) in settings to align the display refresh rate with the GPU output.

I rechecked it and found that both GPU VID Usage and CPU Core Usage dropped significantly whenever the FPS decreased.

Check the temperatures of the CPU and GPU during this situation.
Also, the MX-4 will perform well in a laptop. Even with a solid cooling setup, it may take just weeks to reach optimal performance. For better results in a laptop, consider the Noctua NT-H2 which works more efficiently with bare dies.

The temperatures are ideal, the CPU stays under 80 degrees and the GPU is at 70. I might adjust them later, but for now everything is fine.

Temperatures should stay favorable until the paste is pumped up. Just watch for any rise in temperature over the coming weeks.
