For the longest duration I've used a system with limited power that struggled to run most first-person shooter titles, often requiring graphics settings to be set to their lowest possible level—even then it was extremely difficult to enjoy the games. Recently, I upgraded my setup with an AMD 3950x CPU and an Nvidia 1660 Super graphics card, hoping to play Doom 3 since my previous machine wasn't capable. Although it feels like almost a decade too late, I stumbled upon an article that said the Doom 3 source code is available for free, though it only directs me to GitHub. That’s all I can manage at the moment. How do I install the game on my new system? Is the GitHub link intended for compiling and modifying the game? I just want to play the original version of Doom 3.

Only the source code for modding is available. Additionally, it's currently priced at $1.50.

It suggests compiling it and mentions possible alternatives available online, though it highlights security concerns. The question then asks if the effort is worth the cost.

I'm not completely clear about what steam is. I thought it was a standalone game, but I couldn't find it on the id software website.

The installation process determines whether the game is downloaded directly to your PC or if access is restricted to an online portal.

The issue with using Steam isn't fully supported by me since I own an Nvidia shield and purchased the game via their website, which wouldn't work there.

You pay and download the ISO to your PC, allowing you to run any anti-cheat software you prefer—no need for a portal website or app. GOG.COM offers DRM-free games for free forever.
