I'm considering whether to return to this game. Early on, the first ten hours were engaging, but after securing my ship, the experience became repetitive with bounty hunters pursuing me without much purpose. Does the story become more about completing quests and grinding from then on?

When you attract attention by killing, bounty hunters come to you. As you progress, new tasks appear such as eliminating cult members, participating in wars, and stealing valuable items. Making the challenge more intense also contributes.

It's an open world experience, they often become monotonous unless you add some lighthearted activities to break the routine. You can initiate a confrontation in a crowded area and attempt to eliminate as many soldiers and townsfolk as possible before a large group of mercenaries appears and you're forced to flee. Finding cover while being noticeable to the AI can be quite amusing, and rooftops will be your safest bet if you want to stay alive. Using poison arrows and knives is highly effective. The big hammer can be entertaining if you want to turn people into comical ragdolls. It's too cumbersome against tougher enemies or large groups of soldiers if stealth isn't your priority. It's difficult to evade or block fast enough, and the swing speed is relatively slow.

For missions, focus on the yellow or blue triangles with an exclamation mark in the center. These are standard story quests that usually offer engaging dialogue and multiple choices for completing objectives. You might have a selection of methods to tackle certain goals, although I haven't played the game recently (about 60 hours before finishing the main campaign). There are still more islands to explore and additional side quests to complete.
