There are solutions that combine hardware security features with PCIe connectivity, offering enhanced online protection. Devices like Ubiquiti Unifi Security Gateway or Firewalla can be adapted into PCIe cards, providing firewall capabilities similar to wireless security hardware. Such setups allow integration into systems for improved online safety.

Hardware firewalls act as distinct networking equipment. When you mention "increased security," you're asking about their protective capabilities.

Your router should already do all this, you only need to firewall between the Internet and the LAN. Granted if you're connected to public WiFi there may be merit there, but even then the benefits of a separate box vs the software firewall within your OS is questionable. If you're paranoid then a router that can connect to WiFi (not sure any can at stock, but any that support OpenWRT firmware can) could provide that additional isolation, it wouldn't make much sense to do this on a PCIe card as there is simply no market for it.

You're asking why a specific need exists beyond what standard external firewalls, routers, or software can address.

Someone designed an Ethernet card that includes built-in firewall functionality.

I also worry about others discovering my past sexual content. Yes, I'm a bit anxious about that. I follow Canadian laws and don't do anything against them, but I'm concerned about what might happen in China if I share such information.
