Is 9800x3d suitable for you and assist with your build?
Hello.
My PC has been with me since 2016, powered by a Core i7 6700K. Since then, I’ve only changed the storage and graphics card—switching from a 980Ti to a 3090 (you can see the limitations). I work in 4K on a PG27UQ monitor with up to 98Hz refresh.
In short, I think it’s time for an upgrade, especially because my cooler is making strange sounds now. I just ordered a 9800X3D for $600 (tax and shipping included).
Do you think this CPU (and its core count) would be enough for someone who uses architectural software like Autodesk and design tools such as Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator? I want to run projects, browse the web, and watch videos without any delays. Or should I consider selling it and buying the 7950X3D or a 9900X instead for $415?
4k gaming performance remains nearly 100% graphics limited even with a 4090/5090, allowing you to use a non-X3D CPU and achieving around 99% of the performance on the 9800X3D. This suggests that a 9900x, 9950x, or 7950x would be more suitable for your needs while offering similar performance to the 9800X3D. To clarify, this applies only to 4k gaming and above. When reducing to 1440p gaming and below, the difference in performance between X3D and non-X3D CPUs becomes much more noticeable. At 1080p, X3D CPUs can be up to 40% faster than non-X3D games. At 1440p, high-end X3D CPUs may offer 15-25% improvement, while at 4k the advantage is limited to just 1-2%.
The X3D cache supports gaming, although for a dedicated workstation setup a more advanced non-X3D model would be preferable. If you plan to use the system for gaming outside of productivity tasks, then the 9800X3D is a suitable choice. The X870/B850 chipsets are ideal companions for the 9800X3D.
These components are perfect matches for the 9800X3D.
Purchasing these alongside the 9800X3D is recommended.

Regarding the remaining parts—ram, cooler, case, power supply, and fans—could you clarify your preferences? You’d like an RGB-free setup with a case accommodating three HDDs and one SATA SSD without being overly bulky. I currently own a Corsair 760T, but it doesn’t provide the best airflow or fit.

5090 reviews indicate CPU bottlenecks are occurring even at 4k with a 9800x3d, according to multiple sources. https://twitter.com/x/status/1882541943135101204 View: https://x.com/hardwarecanucks/status/188...01204?mx=2 A 3090 wouldn't face this issue unless the title is very CPU-intensive. I anticipate the 6090 will encounter more significant CPU bottlenecks with a 9800x3d. Fortunately, AM5 still offers some performance gains for newer upgrades.
I could keep the 9800x3d or sell it if someone came along, when it comes to motherboards I know which chipsets are used but my understanding is limited. Regarding VRM, PCIe lanes, bandwidth reduction, and USB 4 importance, that’s what I understand. I live in Saudi Arabia (and I’m not rich, just joking) and my budget isn’t huge. Thank you and I’ll update the thread.
This suggests that obtaining a 9800x3d might be preferable over 9900xIf I aim for 6090 later, or if I'm misinterpreting.
In another situation it could be advantageous to obtain 9900x and switch to a more recent CPU once the 6090 is released.
TPU with a 4090 shows minimal variation at 4k ultra, except for older CPUs even before the 9800X3D was released. The same results were observed using a 9800X3D at 4k ultra with a 4090.
