Will having six processing units help in the coming three to five years? Is this amount sufficient for streaming?

For a reliable setup lasting over two years, six cores are the minimum needed to handle gaming, Discord, and streaming smoothly without performance issues. Four cores work now but might fall short soon, especially if you play games that require three or more cores. Over time, demand will likely increase further.

Varies by application, but six cores usually suffice today and will remain adequate for many years. It's not a universal rule. The specific CPU model also plays a role.

The CPU could be an i7 980 from 2009 or the modern i5 12400F.

You're seeing performance issues with your 8700K and 3080 Ti setup. It's working okay now, but you're worried it won't last much longer.

Upgrading might improve the performance of the 3080 Ti, possibly due to design constraints, just my perspective...

Six cores are sufficient for streaming, though it varies based on the tasks you perform. Streaming smoothly is possible with eight cores, but six remains adequate when paired with your GPU encoder and for general use. Some suggest it depends on the CPU, but modern processors with six cores should handle current needs well. With consoles now featuring eight-core APUs, future games may see major improvements with eight cores...

I haven't met anyone who broadcasts their match... it feels a bit unoriginal to me. 6 cores are sufficient.

I don't rely on streaming the CPU, and in six years most users probably won't either. Both Nvidia and AMD are boosting GPU encoding abilities each generation, while Nvidia has consistently offered strong performance with little effect on CPU usage.

I own a 4C8T machine that's still functional. I recently acquired a Steam Deck, also 4C8T, which is still in good shape. The 6C should stay useful for several years, at least. Having used a 16C32T setup for the past few months, I can confirm that adding more cores to chips isn't currently practical for gaming, at least not yet. In the future, it might change, but probably not soon.
