I design a new setup and consider high-speed RAM. The CPU is the 5900X... What memory speed can Ryzen achieve for strong performance? I think when DDR5 comes out, its starting frequency might be around 3600MHz perhaps? If I get 4000MHz, would that be better than this? Or should I opt for 3600MHz and try to overclock it?

It's more advantageous to use four sticks at 3733 than two at 4000, since running four sticks at 4000 depends heavily on luck. The base speed for DDR5 will likely range between 4800 and 6400, while OC could reach up to 8400 (though that's currently costly).

I'm not sure about the starting speed. Some places mention around 3600MHz.

The optimal memory speed for a Ryzen 5000 really hinges on your specific chip selection. Certain processors are limited to around 1800 MHz fabric, making DDR4-3600 the best fit, while others can reach 2000 MHz, which suits DDR4-4000. 3600 offers a reliable choice, and going beyond that usually means extra effort—better to invest in solid overclocking potential instead of chasing XMP ratings.

Approximately 4000MHz and 3600MHz could be similar in cost... CL18 and CL16 options available; feel free to decide if you want to go with 64GB.

You're considering adjusting your memory settings yourself. For speeds over 3600, the chip must be manually boosted because AMD can't ensure stability beyond 1800. Skipping this step could mean your 4000 with unoptimized memory will lag behind the 3600 version with tuned memory.

However, perhaps I could try pushing it further with more overclocking at 4000MHz and maybe raise the frequency even higher.

it's a very low chance that you will get a chip with an imc that does 2000/4000 with 4 sticks, the safe bet is to get 4 sticks of 3600 and see how high it goes, most will do 3733 just fine.
