He mentioned he couldn't install certain software because the tablet runs an older version of iOS. It seems the device doesn’t support those apps. You might want to check if there are any lightweight or basic versions available, or consider using a different device that’s compatible. Since you have it nearby, you could try troubleshooting together or look for community forums for similar setups.

Have you made the most improvements possible? Sadly it doesn’t work on Android, which means it might have been saved with a custom ROM.

This situation highlights Apple's strategy of making older devices obsolete. The iPad 4 only runs on 10.3, while newer apps require iOS 11 or later. You can find alternatives on YouTube and Twitter, but the trade-off is that maintaining it takes too much effort compared to selling it for a used tablet.

There isn't any app that can circumvent iOS 11 specifications.

iOS 10 launched in 2016 while the iPad 4 was released in 2012. It seems unusual that a $400 device from 2012 isn't supported anymore after nine years. It worked fine until app developers stopped maintaining iOS 10. You can't change that. iOS11 likely added many new features not available on iOS10, and the remaining iOS10 users are very few. The only models still running iOS10 are the iPhone 5, iPhone 5C and iPad 4.

Sure, that's correct. Developers aren't handling apps for older devices like a 7-year-old tablet or iOS versions. Apple only offers four years of support, which was a clear sign of planned obsolescence even back then, especially with limited RAM.

Where exactly do I even begin? First things first, no—this isn’t about planned obsolescence. It’s just an old 2012 Nexus 7 running some outdated version of Lollipop, and using it is really frustrating. It’s not like it was designed to fail after nine years. Honestly, how long can a device actually be supported? iOS 10 came out five years ago, and it seems support is being phased out. Android usually lasts longer because manufacturers don’t update their devices frequently. The most popular version right now is Android 10 from 2019—you just don’t see that with Apple, which I think is a positive thing.

It's hard to match the Air 2 to the iPad 4, but the Air 2 clearly outperforms it. Just stop making such jokes.
