Inverse ATX motherboard?
Inverse ATX motherboard?
Hello everyone, I'm trying to assist my brother with assembling a computer using the Dell XPS 400 case. The main issue is that the case layout is flipped, so the motherboard is mounted on the left side instead of the right. This affects the I/O panel and PCIe slots, making it difficult to work without flipping the board completely. Pictures have been shared for better understanding. Don't worry about the internal hardware or cables—we'll remove most of them, keeping just the header. My brother prefers the original case because of its nostalgic appearance, so changing it would be tough. The only solution I see is modifying the case itself, possibly by re-welding the back panel and adjusting the screw holes to fit the ATX standard. Are there other alternatives, like newer motherboards that work with these cases, or should we consider altering the case design? If that's the case, would there be professionals or shops that could help us? Thanks in advance.
It’s a ready-made design clearly indicating most parts are exclusive. The best approach is to customize the enclosure, as few brands actually use this format. Only Apple seems to maintain it, though welding isn’t necessary—just drill holes where needed and thread them in, plus carve out spaces for the GPU and graphics card. Doing this yourself lets you maximize performance. It’s ideal if your budget allows; otherwise, using a standard case will limit airflow and cooling height. For low-power setups, it should work fine. Make sure drilling finishes cleanly without metal shavings, and it should be safe to use.
