Introducing an Asus Rampage III Extreme in 2020?
I'm certainly very late to the party, but I've got something important to say for those who are still reading and playing around. You can drop all the guesses. Because in the past days I've tried NVMe on old M4A and M5A boards, which of course only have PCI 2, not PCI 3. And NVMe actually works. I don't even need to make any settings or run upgrades. Both boards find the NVMe immediately without any issues. Even on first try I get a max. reading speed of like slightly over 700MB/s out of it on the M4A and over 790MB/s on the M5A. (It's a cheap one that according to specs should get up to double that). So, to remove all doubts for that, NVMe actually works with even older Asus Boards and PCI 2 and without UEFI as well. That is not the problem. Yet... same problem. On the Rampage III Extreme it doesn't even show up anywhere. And I'd settle for it to show up and work inside the software system and not necessarily in the BIOS as boot device. To be honest, I didn't test it. But based on my experience I'm pretty sure I can make that work. Worth mentioning: I didn't try much at this point. Got the PC from my uncle today for free. So, after some testing I just started my research. Allright, time for an UPDATE: took like 10 or 15 minutes, but I've got the NVMe now... following things... I checked the BIOS version. There is an upgrade on the Asus page, which version 1502 from 2011. No need to install. I already have it on the board. What really got me there is putting the NVMe up from the bottom PCI port to the one above (3rd one). Now it's there. Minimum reading speed slightly above 700MB/s, average above 720MB/s, one time max. so far 750MB/s. Not exactly latest tech. But still better than both, HDD and SSD. So... there is that. NVMe on Rampage III Extreme... check! Catch: does not show up in BIOS. So, let's see what we can do with that thing. Again, I have an idea and I'm pretty sure I can get it to boot from it So, have fun with that one. UPDATE 2: at this point I'm also booting from it
