Internet still lags even with fast connections and high-speed cables
ISP: Verizon Gigabit Fios (1 Gbps) Current configuration includes a primary Xfinity-provided router, a Google WiFi AC1304 mesh system with Ethernet backhaul, and a wired connection via Cat 8 cable from the Google WiFi point in the basement. Network management is handled through the Google Home app.
Issue: Despite having gigabit internet and Cat 8 Ethernet, wired speeds on the PC cap around 200-250 Mbps. Possible bottleneck or configuration problem exists.
What I've tried: Used Cat 8 cables for the Ethernet backhaul; directly connected to the Google WiFi point during speed tests.
What I want to understand: Why do I only get ~200-250 Mbps on wired connections? Is the Google WiFi AC1304 limiting gigabit performance? Could changes like double NAT or router settings be affecting speeds? How can I diagnose or resolve this? Any suggestions for gear or setup adjustments to unlock full gigabit wired speeds?
Thanks for your guidance!
Start by linking the PC straight to the modem, then restart or power cycle the modem. Check your internet speed to see if the issue lies with the modem/router from Xfinity or the Google mesh system. Clarify whether you’re wiring all the Wi-Fi mesh devices directly via Ethernet, and also connecting your PC to a mesh device using Ethernet. Ask if any Wi-Fi signal travels along the path between your PC and the modem.
To figure it out, you analyze the data and look for patterns or trends that support your conclusion.
You connected the PC straight to the modem and achieved 1.8 Gbps download speeds for your test. That means you excluded the Google equipment from consideration, and the issue disappeared. When you reinsert the PC into the network with the Google device, your speeds should return to normal. If you're still unsure or don't understand the contention concept, let me know—I can clarify. What app are you referring to?
