It makes sense if you're aiming for the same model with a modem and router combined. If only the modem is needed, the Netgear Nighthawk CM1100 offers a gigabit option for $150. After two years, you'd likely see nearly a 100% return on your purchase.

In certain regions the monthly rental can range from $11 to $15. That adds up to about $132 to $180 per year. I previously purchased my own modem and router for around $80 five years ago, so it paid off. The new one I bought costs $200. Regardless of the numbers, I’m still ahead. I’d rather pay the retailer than deal with Comcast (Xfinity). Another point is their gateways are a recent improvement. Historically, their equipment has been unreliable. Plus, there’s another issue: Comcast has a way to access all devices on your side of the network. That’s not something you want. With just a modem, they can only check stats, update firmware, and push configuration files. Who’s your provider?
