Internet connection options explained: fiber vs DHCP and PPPoE.
The reasons Fiber ISP relies on PPPoE (Layer 3) rather than pure L2 connections like DHCP stem from historical standards and technical limitations. PPPoE was the only method available for connecting to the internet in older DSL technologies, and it remains the default even after upgrading to GPON Fiber. It doesn’t require hardware acceleration and operates in a single-threaded mode, which limits its ability to support high-speed data rates. Tracking subscriber accounts is another factor, but the core issue lies in compatibility and legacy infrastructure.
