Hello everyone,

I consider myself a technology enthusiast, though I’m quite limited in my understanding of network configurations and internet protocols. I lack knowledge regarding how data is allocated to different programs and how those programs interact with each other over the internet. Recently, I encountered problems with a game that resulted in me being disconnected. Notably, this disconnection also severed my connection to messaging services like Discord and the Xbox application. Consequently, I have two inquiries regarding how my computer utilizes the internet: 1) Why does disconnecting from a game frequently cause me to lose access to Discord or the Xbox app, while other programs like Twitch and Spotify continue functioning normally? 2) How is my internet bandwidth managed across various applications, and are certain programs linked together through a common internet connection? My aim is simply to gain a better comprehension of the mechanics behind how a personal computer employs internet resources for its applications. Thank you!

Each program presumes it possesses boundless data transmission capacity until specifically instructed otherwise. Each application transmits or receives information at its maximum rate. The underlying equipment subsequently limits performance to the device’s physical limitations through techniques such as data storage, protocol exchanges, and similar methods.

Thank you for providing that information. Could you explain why disconnecting from a personal computer game often leads to Discord also losing its connection, yet doesn’t affect Google Chrome or Spotify’s internet access?
