I recently upgraded my 1050ti to a 1660 super and added an extra 1tb hdd that I had on hand. Shortly after, my PC began stuttering and freezing when performing tasks. During games, my FPS would drop to about half for roughly ten seconds before returning to normal levels. These freezes occurred approximately once every minute. My GPU would spike to full capacity and then drop to around 20% during these drops, leading me to suspect a graphics card issue. I removed the second HDD and switched back to the 1050ti, which worked for a few hours before the problem returned. Then I reinstalled the 1660 super, and it functioned normally for another couple of hours before the issue reappeared. This time, my GPU was running at around 50% usage and then dropping to about 15% during the stutters. I’ve also observed my normal HDD would jump to full capacity and stay there for a minute or so before returning to normal levels. The PC temperatures are stable, and no overclocking is in effect. Everything seems to be operating within normal parameters.
Here’s what I have attempted so far:
- Uninstalled and reinstalled the latest Nvidia drivers
- Disabled SysMain (Superfetch)
- Disabled Game DVR
- Removed the second HDD
- Used 1050ti
- Thoroughly dusted and cleaned the PC

- Power Supply: Aerocool Integrator 600W
- Processor: Intel Core i7 7700K 4.2Ghz
- Cooler: Freezer 7 Pro
- RAM: 16B Kingston HyperX Predator 16GB (2x8GB)
- Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-z270P-D3
- Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce® GTX 1660 Super

Use ddu to uninstall and reinstall the newest NVIDIA driver once more
Monitor the CPU temperature
Ensure all cables are securely fastened
Update BIOS via the BIOS setup menu using the Q-Flash option

Reset BIOS with a jumper (CLR CMOS or JBAT) – you may need to adjust priority afterward
Verify system integrity through Windows tools

Thanks for the update. So far I've used the DDU uninstaller and reinstalled drivers. CPU temperatures were recorded with nothing running and during benchmark tests. Concerning the BIOS, I'm not very tech-savvy, so I'll wait for my dad to return home to assist me as I'm unsure about what I'm doing.
So after the PC ran well for a while, it's now freezing again. I'm planning to try the other things you mentioned, but do they offer any hints?

It might not be the PSU itself, but if it's been around for six years or more, it could be worth checking out. Borrowing a reliable alternative would give you a better idea.

At the end of last month it was down to £41, but I got it for £49. It was my first one and it worked well when I built the PC.
I’m still trying to persuade my dad to help with the BIOS, but he’s not keen. I just want to add more details because I’m not sure what’s important.
It’s unlikely the BIOS requires a clean Windows install. Just format and reinstall, reset it, and don’t adjust anything—just let the system handle the graphics drivers. If that fails, there may be hardware problems.
So in order to improve things, I tried all the advice given and ended up purchasing a new SSD and doing a fresh installation. However, the problems persist, and I'm uncertain about the cause. I've invested a lot of money yet haven't been able to resolve the issue. The disk usage problem seems fixed with the new SSD, but the PC still lags.
