Intel's controller is interfering with Windows Defender and Microsoft updates.
I was constantly searching for the reason behind the driver issue on my 2011 system with Windows 7 SP2. Running it on a P6X58D-E board using ASUS hardware, I confirmed the driver is up to date from the official site. Yet I still can’t launch Windows Defender or access Windows Update. I’ve done clean factory installs and used backup Acronis HDD images. I’m not using RAID, just plain old setups. It seems this particular driver might be interfering with security features. My motherboard doesn’t support Marvell chipsets, so I switched SATA-6 drives to SATA-2 ports from Marvell’s original configuration. This change has been a consistent problem since the product launch. Interestingly, the Intel ICH10R SATA AHCI driver is actually from Marvell. When I removed or reinstalled it, everything worked perfectly. After reboot, Windows switched to its own drivers and all drives appeared removable, even though I tried various fixes. Now that I’ve installed the OEM Intel driver again, the removable status disappears. I searched for updates but found none—even Windows Update doesn’t have a fix. Could this controller be affecting security settings or update processes?
