Nvidia’s new 3000 series GPUs support PCIe 4.0, while Intel’s 10th generation processors don’t. AMD already offers this capability in its current generation. This suggests Intel’s 10th gen might be less competitive for high-end gaming now. I’m thinking about upgrading my old 3770k and was always a fan of Intel. I had high hopes that the 10th gen would bring big changes, but Nvidia’s move makes AMD look even stronger.
PCIe Gen 4 seems unlikely to significantly impact performance, probably won’t make much of a difference.
Even the powerful 2080 Ti sees only a slight drop of 2-3% with PCIe 3.0 x8. Most systems can comfortably boost to x16 in the top slot (they usually switch from x8/x8 when using SLI), which is double the capacity. PCIe 4.0 x16 offers even more, but by then it's largely irrelevant for GPUs—they simply don’t require that level of bandwidth.
I've noticed that some very fast SSDs can benefit from it, though GPUs aren't the main focus. PCIe Gen 3 works well for most users right now—about 99% of them—and it's a good choice for future-proofing.
I believed Nvidia's push for new GPUs had a specific reason behind it. It seems new GPUs might face significant CPU bottlenecks, and PCIe 4 won't solve that issue. Regarding performance, cores matter more than clock speed—choosing the 3900X with higher clocks would likely be better.
Those latest GPUs haven't been revealed yet, and we lack details about the 10700k's performance because it hasn't been released either. We can only guess based on available information, though results vary depending on the tasks. AMD currently leads in efficiency, but still falls short in many titles.
It doesn't matter how much fans claim; if the product is selling out quickly, it's already over. Even if preorders vanish fast, it's a lost opportunity.
