A wide range of applications. Launching Spotify, Chrome, etc., demands minimal processing power. Modern quad-core systems handle it smoothly. Intensive multitasking—such as rendering and timeline scrubbing on 4K footage simultaneously—will need more strength. A gaming PC with the 9700K is ideal.
I just upgraded to a Ryzen 3800X and it’s now handling my GTX 1080 Ti quite well, but it’s pushing my VR performance to the limit at 4K. The capture last night didn’t work, so I’ll try another method tonight. My single-thread speed matches around 9900k/ks/9700k on a CPU, and multi-thread performance is much stronger. I managed to locate the 3800X for $350 at Microcenter, which means it’s a great deal compared to its listed price.
In reality, Intel seems unlikely to launch a major breakthrough before 2021 or 2022. They’ll likely enhance the 9900K series, move to 9900Ks, and possibly the 10900K in the same architecture line.
Consider purchasing a 3700x, enhance your GPU in two years, and revisit your plans in four to five years.
I own two Intel systems (the last one sold for space after selling the third) and this year’s upgrade didn’t involve them. It wasn’t about price; I could have picked a 9900K/KS instead, but AMD’s 12C/24T 3900X was a more affordable choice. I assembled a strong machine, though my PowerColor Vega64 Red Devil is holding me back temporarily. It’s sufficient for now until the next release of Ampere and NAVI 23. Even with the 3900X, I’m considering upgrading to 16C/32T with the 3950X if the performance gap becomes clear.
