It's frustrating when you need to replace both the CPU and motherboard every time a new chip is released. Why can't manufacturers stick to a consistent socket like AM4 for a long time before switching to something newer, such as AM5 when a fresh CPU line arrives?

Intel’s boards generally support two generations, with 6xx and 7xx models fitting the 12th and 13th generation. AM4 has been around for a while, though it stands out as an exception. Additionally, newer boards now include different CPU lines for AMD, allowing you to use multiple generations of processors.

Intel is releasing two CPU generations on a single motherboard, while AMD extended this to four. There might be some ambition involved, but upgrading a CPU design often leads to necessary changes and new hardware requirements. It’s a mix of both.

According to @Dedayog, these updates improve the platform for their newest processors. My investment of $0.02 reflects my decision to refresh every 4-5 years, not just the CPU but the entire system. I should think about the expenses for the motherboard and its lifespan after four years or more... I’m planning to get new hardware, so a replacement motherboard is already being considered.

Well, greed isn't the sole solution. Intel incorporated the LGA775 socket across 12 CPU series in four configurations, encompassing more than 200 models. These motherboards seldom accommodate a third of them fully. Often, RAM, VIA, power delivery, or south/north bridges lack the flexibility to evolve indefinitely. Constraints from quantity, inefficiencies, and physical trace resistance will hinder progress in transistor speed, size reduction, accuracy, and centralization. TLDR: Reusing the same socket across multiple CPU lines will inevitably limit potential in some form.

Keep in mind that while AM4 supported a LOT of CPU's, there were chipset limitations all over the place. A X570/B550/A520 chipset wouldn't support a 1700X, for example, because of limits with the BIOS. I really like AMD's philosophy for this more than Intel for a few reasons. Biggest of which is maturity. B550 and Ryzen 5000 are really stable. Almost all of the kinds have been ironed out. I've had so few problems with my Ryzen setup, it's amazing. With Intel, you're basically getting the first or second generation of a platform, so there can be really annoying problems, and they might be different from previous years, and different from subsequent years. And that is a big reason I'm skipping Ryzen 7000. That, and I seriously have no reason to upgrade.
