I don’t see clear information on this topic: Do the latest 12th generation CPUs support 4K120 HDR over HDMI 2.1? Are there motherboards that can handle this? Has anyone tried it before? I’m planning to build a compact Linux PC for my LG C1, hoping for HDR support if it becomes available on Linux. If the 12600k works, it would be ideal.
It officially backs it up according to intel. However, from my experience, the Intel Linux GPU drivers aren’t great. If you have a choice, opt for the 5600G—it should offer a better performance than Intel’s drivers. Plus, if you ever need heavy GPU tasks, it’ll run much faster.
They remain superior to Intel's drivers, and in Wayland they function quite effectively based on my experience.
They might share a text file and it would work better than what they currently have on Windows or Linux. I’ve faced issues with Intel Linux drivers, especially with Xfce—they often crash unexpectedly, sometimes freezing the screen to a small size or causing random freezes. Diagonal and horizontal tearing are common, along with unpredictable crashes. In short, avoid using an Xfce distribution with Intel.
I'm set up with a dual boot setup on my gaming rig using the 3080. I'm mainly looking to build another PC so I can avoid dual booting and skip the bothersome nVidia drivers on Linux. It only makes sense if I can still run 4K at 120fps, especially since HDMI 2.1 is needed for that. Intel's marketing mentions support for 8K and many 4K displays, but their specs page for the Core i5-12600K caps at 4K60: https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/...0-ghz.html. Plus, motherboard makers only list 4K60 as supported. For instance: https://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z690 Phantom Gaming-ITXTB4/index.asp#Specification
Refers to the HDMI 2.1 standard, which supports 4K at 120Hz with HDR.
