It was primarily an OEM product using the same firmware as the 3000 series, effectively merging into it. However, five years later, the 4000 series had a much longer lifespan than expected, which is unfortunate for the socket. Intel followed a strict plan of releasing two generations per socket only.

Two generations per port. Following Raptor Lake, it's probable a switch to a different port will occur too.

They've been working on two generations for the consumer socket for more than ten years. It's probably meant for around three years of support, similar to AM4, though it received nearly three years more after that. Who knows what will happen with AM5?

They mostly used three generations on a consumer socket (1150 supported Haswell, Devil's Canyon, Broadwell), with three chips on the X299 platform (7980XE, 9980XE, 10980XE all essentially same CPU with slight changes). Usually they got two units. It seems confirmed that LGA 1700 will only support 12th and 13th gen before being replaced by LGA 18XX, though don't rely on the September 5, 2022 update from RONOTHAN.

Technically Devil's Canyon was just a generic Haswell with improved TIM. The same applies to the i7-2700K because of its exclusion from the express chipset. It’s similar to Coffee Lake/9th gen—LGA 1151 V2 only supported one CPU generation.
