I own a pair of these intel servers, one slim and the other around 3 inches tall. Both share the same motherboard, featuring two 10-core CPUs and 96GB of RAM. The slim model accommodates eight 2.5-inch drives, while the taller one holds four 3.5-inch drives plus a tape drive. They both function properly, though I noticed something unusual: the OS and BIOS only detect the first two drives, and the other drives don’t light up but are still connected to the backplane. This seems like a possible oversight. As a beginner in servers, the Intel documentation is limited, but I’m unsure if the drives need SATA cables. Since they’re plugged into the backplane via a large ATA connector linked to the motherboard, cabling might not be necessary. If someone has experience with these systems, I’d appreciate their advice. The slim one has six drives connected, showing only the first two, and the thick one has four drives plus a tape drive, also showing just the first two. The tape drive powers up easily, so its setup appears correct. I’m attempting to run Proxmox on these machines and plan to use ZFS because Proxmox doesn’t support hardware RAID. I have Proxmox installed on my desktop with six mirrored drives, which works well, but these servers are the challenge. Thank you.

There may be ports on the backplane that aren't linked to anything. Refer to section 6.4.1 in the manual for details.

Are you connecting to the Raid card to verify the presence of the drives? They may require initialization there before appearing elsewhere.

Which specific version of ZFS are you considering? Verify your operating system and ensure compatibility with the controllers on your server.
