Intel processor I7 3770K
Hi everyone, I own an old server with 6TB drives and a 240GB SSD, plus 24GB DDR3 RAM at 1600Mhz. The CPU is currently an I5 2600 Skt 1155. I’m considering upgrading to an I7 3770K for a gaming rig. Some people say it’s solid, others warn about its age and limitations. Since this is going to be a performance-focused setup, would you recommend this processor? Any advice would be really appreciated. Cheers!
The 3770k can still perform well if you manage to push it to higher speeds. It’s running at 4/8 right now. The exact time it lasts longer is unclear. If you’re at your limit, it might not last much longer. Doing the absolute best is what you’ll get, though. New $100 CPUs are available today that can surpass it. You’d need a better motherboard and more RAM, but those will cost more. A lot depends on the price of the CPU itself and whether the investment makes sense—especially since other options might be worth considering. @Levent notes that achieving a strong overclock could be challenging.
It’ll be tight no matter what. The choice shouldn’t really matter. If cooling is a concern, a cooler will do just fine. It’s fine for gaming as long as you don’t push it too hard. I overclocked to 4.5, but the games I played were mainly CPU-heavy, so it might not have been worth it considering how these newer titles perform.
