Hey there. I just got my PC upgraded with the i9-12900KS and installed the thermal paste from the cooler. The cooler model I used is an Asus Rog Strix LC II 360. I’ve noticed some odd temperature spikes on two of the eight physical cores even when everything is idle. It seems like those cores are running hotter than the others. This isn’t exactly normal, especially since I’m not a tech expert and it might seem strange. The issue appears to be that my cooler kicks in at 75% fan speed when one core hits around 70°C, which is pretty bothersome. Keep in mind this is happening at idle in a 22°C room with a 360mm cooler. Let me know if you want more details!

Yes, it seems like you're encountering a compatibility concern. Have you verified the BIOS version and contact frame type?

LGA1700 connection was poor with IHS 12900KS; temperature readings were extremely high, almost like a furnace. Usually, spikes in temperature suggest the CPU wasn’t properly seated with thermal paste or the mounting hardware. You might try reapplying paste and ensuring everything is secure. Alternatively, remove the LGA1700 bracket and swap it for a thermal grizzly cooler. This is typical for your processor.

We need a frame for bending adjustments. You can purchase them on Amazon for around $12 from Thermalright. I’m not too concerned with the customer feedback since most reviews say they’re only useful in very high overclock scenarios. Based on my testing with the 12/13/14 CPUs, their opinions seem off. I noticed a 5°C drop in idle temps. My system graphs showed consistent results, unlike the stock ILM. None of the reviewers mentioned this. The problem is that using these brackets might void your warranty if you still have one. But swapping the original ILM for these was straightforward. Just remember: don’t over-tighten the screws. Even if people did, loosening them resolved the issue.

I own the TG Contact frame and was able to push my CPU up to about 40W more sustained with my air cooler (BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 4). Without it, I was limited to around 190W sustained. Now I can sustain roughly 235W while running the fan at a lower speed, making it much quieter. I initially tightened everything too much and it wouldn’t boot, but after tweaking, it worked perfectly. I highly suggest getting one from @Mimine.

Thank you for your feedback. It looks like most people agree to focus on getting the contact frame. I’ll begin by resolving the repeated BSODs on my PC before moving forward. My CPU does heat up, but it hasn’t become a problem yet. I’ve played several games at once and kept temperatures below 80°C. What’s new is how quickly the temps change—sometimes dropping from 27°C to 70°C in just a moment while idle. In-game, it seems similar, but it shifts from 47°C to 85°C in about a second, with fans kicking in and then everything returns to normal.

I swapped out the thermal paste and used my own, and now I'm seeing 20c at idle.
