Intel i7 9750H laptop experiences throttling at 30 watts
Hello, this is my first post, so be gentle. I’m using an Alienware M17 R2 (2020) with an Intel i7-9750H, 4.5GHz boost, 16GB RAM, Windows 10 BIOS 1.20. I’m trying to keep it simple. Since Dell stopped me from lowering the CPU voltage, gaming has been tough. I’ve been checking my hardware to see what I can do to improve performance.
I notice a problem: under heavy use, my CPU drops to its base speed (2.6GHz) and draws 28-30W. Its TDP is listed as 35W normally and 45W under load. I’ve tried turning off PL2, reducing turbo time, keeping PL1 and PL2 unchanged, and capping core speeds. Even pushing PL1 to 35W without overheating still causes it to drop to base speed and 30W after a few minutes in a demanding game.
It seems this only happens when the GPU is busy. My stress tests show it keeps throttling even at steady load, not just under GPU strain. I recently learned I might be experiencing pump-out with the paste. Switching to a Honeywell PTM phase change pad helped a lot, but gaming still drops to 30W. From what I hear, it could be a motherboard setting issue. My GPU stays below 70°C, so it’s likely a CPU problem.
My recent log file (attached) from throttlestop shows that with all settings back to defaults, PL1 caps at 90W and PL2 at 90W, lasting about 32 seconds. I think Dell might have set PL1 to max boost power to get the most out of it, but it can’t handle more than 30W during games. If anyone has advice on how to fix this, I’d really appreciate it.
Edit: After resetting throttlestop and restarting, the default values show PL1 at 47W and PL2 at 90W. I played the game with no changes and saw these numbers in the log.
