I put in my i5 9600k last week and immediately saw that my idle temperatures are a bit higher than before. When idle and just browsing, it’s around 36-42°C, but when under load it rises to 68-72°C. Is this typical for the latest generation processors?

These temperatures are acceptable. The 9000 series Intel CPUs tend to run slightly warmer, but it's perfectly okay. Running at around 72°C during heavy use is normal and fine. Your earlier CPU was likely an I3 or similar, which consumes less power.

Absolutely, the 9000 isn't a standout chip even when soldered. That's expected.

Upgrading the CPU fan could improve cooling, especially if you're using a high-end processor like the i5-7400. Your current Noctua NH-L9i should handle it well, but a better fan might help with stability and longevity.

The temperatures are nice with the cooler in place. It makes sense to maintain them unless you aim for higher performance, then upgrading to a more powerful setup would be wise.

Checking the load temperatures across all six cores under full load indicates whether each core operates at maximum capacity. If yes, everything seems normal. Otherwise, repeat the test with all cores running at full load and recheck temperatures using a tool like prime95. Make sure you don’t attempt to overclock the processor with your existing cooler. The I5 7400 is designed for 65 watts of TDP, while the I5 9600K supports up to 95 watts. Your new CPU has a higher TDP than the previous one and still uses the same cooler, which explains the increased heat output. Additionally, the new chip includes two more cores and runs at a much higher clock speed, contributing to elevated temperatures.
