It's hard to say for sure, but it seems like the release might have been rushed. There could be limited initial production, and more copies might come later. Or maybe it was the final version only.

I haven't checked the stock levels, but a brief search shows the 10940X is available at one of my usual locations while 10980XE isn't. That means some items are likely in stock elsewhere. I'd assume they're generally accessible. Shortages can happen with new products.

They will provide whenever possible. In the meantime, you can find the 9980xe and 7980xe at the same price, roughly. It’s not that they’re vastly different. And unless you require avx512, there are other options available.

The key distinction lies in the inclusion of VNNI instructions in AVX-512 with the 10 series. Previous versions lack this feature.

The key distinction lies beyond the straightforward price adjustments. It seems there were updates addressing Spectre/Meltdown issues, though it's unclear if these were added via silicon changes or already embedded in microcode. For typical users, Cascade Lake-X functions similarly to Skylake-X. AVX-512 support remains limited (though useful when available), and VNNI's role is expected to shrink further.

It runs on the Skylake X platform. Performance is a bit unusual, and there are some silicon adjustments made to prevent overheating. The extent of the fixes isn’t clear to me.

Actually no, with the shortage the 9980xe is currently trading between 2.5 to 3K USD. The whole range is influenced by supply and demand. I was hoping I'd been lucky enough for the 9940 to be around 700 USD for a short time, matching the price of the new chip, which helped me secure one. The next day it dropped back to 1300.
