ElmorLabs achieved 9ghz using liquid helium. They encountered a technical problem that cost them 9.1 and intend to retry. The price of liquid helium is uncertain, but it likely wasn’t inexpensive.
The system to produce and maintain the helium liquid will be the costly component (several thousand pounds). Helium is actually quite affordable.
I searched online, but I’m not sure how reliable or up-to-date those numbers are. Still, they give a decent rough idea for comparison. Liquid nitrogen is about ten cents per liter, while liquid helium costs around five dollars per liter. Taking these into account, an OC project in liquid helium would likely be about 50 times more expensive than one in liquid nitrogen.
