Intel 8700k becomes noticeably warmer than other models
My i7 8700k runs smoothly with LM and has been stable at 5.2 GHz 1.38v, maintaining temperatures up to 65°C while scoring around 1670 on Cinebench R15 for over a year. Recently, I conducted a temperature check using realtemp and Coretemp after watching a YouTube tutorial. During Cinebench R15, my core 3 reached 100°C while others stayed at 65°C or lower, causing the system to lock up and requiring a forced shutdown. After cleaning and reapplying thermal paste, the issue persisted. I then replaced the cooling cooler with a Noctua NH-D15, but temperatures remained consistent. My core 3 is now running significantly hotter than the others, even after updating BIOS and adjusting voltages. I’m unsure if LM is degrading or if sensors are failing. The thermal paste inside the package seems to be heating up too quickly. I’m considering a full rebuild or replacement if this continues. Any advice would be appreciated.
My prediction leans toward increased force on the liquid metal or a minor release. As suggested by the name, 'liquid metal' is indeed quite fluid.

3:11 am (likely two hours prior)? That would mean 5:11 am now. Where are you located? China, Hong Kong, or the Philippines? Regardless, focus on the underside of the IHS and the CPU. Use 1500 grit sandpaper with your fingers to eliminate any hardened residue. Avoid a shiny finish or reflective layer, as LM bonds poorly to smooth surfaces. Continue sanding until all remnants are gone. You’ll notice the residue disappears, though minor imperfections may remain and need further smoothing. The IHS requires extra effort. Next, clean thoroughly with 91% alcohol and paper towels, then dry with a lint-free cloth. Ensure both surfaces have a matte finish. Confirm completely that all silicone adhesive is removed. Apply new LM to the CPU and spread it in. The dulled surface will help it adhere better. Add a matching layer beneath the IHS, then re-seal. For extra security, place four small drops of RTV Silicone in each corner of the IHS or use a floating IHS—apply 4 dabs of Kryonaut or similar paste on each corner. This enhances stability during reattachment. It makes a significant difference. Allow time to cool properly afterward.
