Intel 6th and 7th generation processors should work with the Gigabyte H310M H 2.0 motherboard.
I own an older computer and want to make a few improvements. I've already replaced the graphics card, but the CPU is still limiting performance, which is a Pentium Gold G5420. The motherboard is a Gigabyte H310M H 2.0, and it supports CPUs from the 8th and 9th generation. From what I understand, the LGA 1151 socket has two versions—one for the 6th and 7th gen and another for the 8th and 9th gen. My goal is to find out if the 6th and 7th gen CPUs work with this chipset and board. I’m considering swapping it for a 6400 or 6600 processor. I also have a 16 GB RAM stick running in single-channel mode at 2400 MHz, and I need advice on whether to add another stick or upgrade to an 8x2 configuration for better performance. This system is mainly used for light gaming, so I’m not looking for heavy upgrades.
Visit the manufacturer's website for details: https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/H31...-rev-10#kf. This ensures compatibility only with Core i3/i5/i7/i9 8xxx or 9xxx processors, which outperform 6th or 7th generation chips. The documentation notes a maximum RAM capacity of 32 GB, suggesting a 2x16 configuration could work, though 2x8 might suffice. Compare the cost implications to see what matters most.
The only motherboard I know that supports 6th through 9th generation CPUs is the Z170M OC Formula. Even then, support is limited because one engineer leaked a BIOS update on a forum that added it for just that board. You can't simply download the 9th generation BIOS from ASRock's site. There are methods to adapt Z170/Z270 boards for 8th/9th generation CPUs by changing the socket and hardware, but this isn’t something I’d suggest for regular use, and it seems unlikely you could reverse the process.
