Hello everyone, I'm seeking some guidance on my PC. I'm considering switching from a 10th gen i5-10400 to an i9-10900k, but with the 11th gen coming soon, it seems promising. The rumors suggest the 11th gen i9 has just eight cores, which might mean it's more suited for overclockers and less so for those who prefer not to overclock. My motherboard doesn't support PCIe 4.0, so I'm wondering if a 10th gen i9 would be better than an 11th gen i7 given its ten-core design. Should I hold off on upgrading or go with the i9 right now? I'm concerned about potential price hikes from resellers.

CPUs offer much more than just cores. The latest 11th generation chips process data efficiently at higher frequencies, which can boost overall performance, especially in gaming.

Per the math, an 8-core setup in the 11th would match around 9.5 cores from the 10th generation, provided the workload scales perfectly and captures that IPC boost. For gaming, it may slightly favor newer hardware since most titles don’t benefit much from thread count increases. Ultimately, your GPU is likely to be the bottleneck when pushing performance.
