I’ve replaced your old hard drive with a 250GB SSD in your new laptop. I’m planning to reinstall Windows using a bootable USB drive. That should work if you follow the right steps.

Your message is quite vague. You should provide a bootable USB or DVD to install Ubuntu on your computer.

This would be the optimal choice. Get the Ubuntu .iso file from the official source via the Download Universal USB Installer link (found near the bottom of the page). Following the steps should make it simple for UUI to set up the installation on your device. Turn on the laptop using the USB drive and experiment with it if desired, or install it immediately. You won’t need to manually create partitions; the installer will handle everything until you understand how the operating system functions. Remember that any existing data on the stick will be erased when converting it into a bootable Linux drive, and the HDD contents will be wiped during the installation process.

Ubuntu appears to recognize the USB device but doesn't install on the HDD, only acknowledging it.

What is the precise brand and model of your computer? Was it installed with Windows 7, or does it run a more recent operating system such as Windows 8 or 10?

I tried it, but your system still can't detect the drive. Using the same USB and exact drive works perfectly, yet installing on the HDD doesn't function when you plug it into the laptop. A replacement drive might help, but it could also cause further issues—consider checking connections or trying a different drive if possible.

Set it up on the existing hard drive inside the laptop. Just like any operating system, Ubuntu needs various device drivers for proper functioning. Installing it on a different drive while it's on another machine might install incorrect drivers.
