I occasionally design systems and handle maintenance for friends and family. Recently, I began using bootable USBs for installing Windows 8.1 Pro. Is the bootable media compatible with both the core version or can I use one USB for both and let the product code determine which one works?

I think the Windows 8.0 activation code won't function with the Windows 8.1 installer, though you can bypass the setup process. After starting up, you can enable it using a standard 8.0 key via System Information.

He referred to a matchup between 8.1 pro and 8.0 pro, noting that 8.0 is the base version.
