The process of moving a Windows hard drive to a new system can affect its legitimacy depending on the motherboard. It's generally true that transferring it may result in issues if the new system isn't compatible. Regarding Microsoft, you can reach out to them for re-certification if problems arise, though the steps may vary.

That's correct, it will no longer be valid. You can also reach out to Microsoft for validation.

Yes, it's confirmed that validation should only occur if the issue arose from a system repair or similar circumstance, not merely when attempting to use it on another device.

I just discovered this solution—just click the "Activate by phone" option if the key didn’t work. After roughly 10 minutes with automated support, I finally got my Windows activated. Let me know if you need assistance.

Have you replaced the hard drive in a fresh setup, or is this the identical system requiring reactivation?

The hard drive was initially in my HP all-in-one PC. I removed it to transfer it to a custom-built system and reinstalled Windows, but the product key wouldn't work. I attempted the activation call and followed the automated steps, entering the code that came with it. Yes, I replaced the hard drive in a new setup.

It wasn't a direct copy of Windows 7 or 8.
