Absolutely, that's what happened—I didn't notice the Windows partition or any unused areas; it just treated the drive as completely empty.

That fixed the problem. The tricky part when you can't even set up Ubuntu. Do they really test for that stuff?

It could be that the optical drive is faulty. The salesperson at Best Buy charged a lot, but it doesn’t seem to be functioning properly.
