Installation failed for Windows on an iMac running MacOS High Sierra 10.13.6 in mid-2011.
I'm attempting to set up Windows 10 on a mid-2011 iMac running MacOS High Sierra (version 10.13.6). I've tried several approaches: first installing Windows 7 from a CD using Bootcamp before Windows 10, using an external drive instead of the internal ODD, and even booting directly from the boot menu. The Windows installer would not load properly, and the Mac would boot into a black screen prompt. Some users suggest that using an external ODD might be the problem. Another user shared a method involving a GPT partition created with GPT fdisk, possibly due to Apple's specific disk implementation. I've had to manually repartition and remove Windows entries multiple times because the disk files were corrupted. I haven't tried MacOS El Capitan yet, as recommended in some of those guides, since backing up data and reinstalling repeatedly is tedious. Could you offer advice or alternative solutions? Others seem to succeed on this setup, so I'm curious about their methods. Thanks ahead for any guidance.
Macs from that time still managed to start from outside sources without problems. Just choose the option at boot. If you own an external drive, you can copy a fresh copy of macOS onto it and attempt the Windows setup there. If it succeeds, the problem likely lies within your system settings. We’re aware you’re facing an issue, but pinpointing the cause could involve permissions, third-party software conflicts, or a long list of possibilities that might seem overwhelming. Make sure you can work with external drives, as that would simplify troubleshooting instead of facing repeated failures. From there you’ll have a solid starting point.
I should note that I also attempted this. Thank you, I'll follow through.
