Install Windows 10 silently for a media player without disruption.
I'm using Windows 10 version 22H2, build 19045.2604. Today I tried to open an .mkv file and Windows prompted me to choose an app. It was unexpected because everything was functioning normally before. On the list of options, besides MPC and other programs, I noticed a new icon labeled "Media Player." I checked the Apps & Features section and confirmed it was indeed added recently (DD/MM/YYYY format). It seems it was installed today. I'm living alone, so I didn't think ghosts or gnomes were hiding in my apartment. It probably came from an automatic installation. Or maybe I misread it—once I clicked the "To-Do" app icon in the Start Menu, it started installing itself. That experience with the middle finger from Microsoft really showed how frustrating unexpected behavior can be. I wonder if it was something else entirely. Is there a way to review logs? The Event Viewer didn't show any entries related to "player" in Setup or System. Now I'm curious about the Windows Store—are they updating automatically? It displays "Windows Media Player," which makes me think it might be an automatic update of the old WMP, causing issues with file extensions.
Yes, Windows 10 and 11 come with pre-installed apps that start automatically when you click them.
Windows applications are updated automatically by default, similar to mobile devices. The new Media player app supersedes the discontinued version, according to recent reports.
Yeah, it seems so. And doing it in (almost) most annoying way. Congrats MS. Again Found the setting and disabled it right after I've hit send on the first post :V
The updated Media Player was included in a Windows update. The installation date refers to the update release. This new app serves as a replacement for the previous Groove and Movies & TV applications. It functions similarly to the classic Windows 7 Media Player, offering video and music playback. You can now remove Groove and Movies & TV from your system.
