I owned a laptop from years ago running Windows 10. It became very slow, so I considered switching to Windows 7 just to test it out. Later, I realized the hard drive was faulty and replaced it with an SSD, then reinstalled Windows 10. When setting up, I entered my email into the setup window. I noticed on my Microsoft account it appears as if both my laptop and my main PC are linked to the same email address. Is this a problem? I’ve heard you can’t have multiple Windows versions on different devices.

Everything is okay. Your account is shared with the team, but the Windows license isn't active.

Ah, good question. Your laptop still retained the license information even after you took out the hard drive and switched to a new operating system.

Windows behaves in an unusual way. It keeps track of the devices you use, so even after adjusting the storage settings, it retains information about your RAM, CPU, GPU, and motherboard, along with the key you possess.

At any stage of your upgrade, the license seems to cease functioning without clear explanation. It reminds me of the ship of theseus puzzle. Unlike that thought experiment, it can't determine whether the key works only for the original machine or for a system that changes gradually over time.
