You're unsure about the installation process, but it seems likely it will work with whatever Windows version you currently have, just like other updates do.

Yes, using optical media or USB works. When installed through Windows 7 or 8's reservation feature, it behaves like a Windows update and remains on the existing hard drive.

You can also build your own installation media such as a USB drive or DVD, which lets you upgrade your device or reinstall after an upgrade. This means you can simply insert it, launch the program, and perform a clean install on your SSD. Your SSHD is still required beforehand.
